Hi there, I am absolutely fascinated by the 30's and 40's. Starting to buy some clothes and love the music would love to learn to dance to some of it. So I am looking for a guy who is also interested and would like to get together to go to events. I am a young 42, so someone between 30 and 45ish. Sorry I know this isn't a dating line but a girls gotta try!

Hi Nigel and Kathy, I have just returned from a very pleasant week in Norfolk. (Kelling Heath). I know that The North Norfolk Railway (The Poppy Line) is organizing a WWII weekend in September. Not much use to you for July I know, but why not try their website, or give them a ring at their HQ in Sheringham - might be able to give you some pointers? - best wishes and good luck,

Hello, I'm helping to organise my cousin's wedding. We're both 40s enthusiasts and I would love to find a 30s or 40s car for her to travel in on the big day. We are in the Preston area of Lancashire. If anyone knows of a 30s or 40s car owner who does weddings or would be willing to in August I'd be grateful for any info. Many thanks, Polly

Does anyone know of any WWII/Home Front events going on in East Anglia on either of the last 2 weekends in July this year? Our grandson (6) is coming down from Liverpool for a holiday then - he desperately wants to 'dress up' with us (he saw us at Kentwell at end of May), and so far we haven't been able to find any events to go to!! Any ideas anyone?!

We are both fairly new to 1940's events, can anyone suggest where we can get 1940's style or original clothing? I have at present a officers uniform and my wife has ATC uniform. We are trying to get hold of a ATC cap and shoes for my wife, I am after brown shoes and cap also. Due to summer having a good chance of being hot!(sometimes,) any suggestions where my wife may find a reasonable 1940's style dress for summer wear. We are going to Loughborough in a couple of weeks and Severn Valley also, are these a good palce to source clothing or is it overpriced? Thanks for taking the time to read this. Sorry I have not included e. mail address this time, but spam mail can be a pain.

The format for the Czech Supper dance will be vintage music from the period 1920 - 1939 (maybe a little later) - lots of continental dance music and some American bands. A hot supper will be included in the ticket price. Our dance events always re-create the period with the closest attention to detail. Period clothing for guests and the audience will be encouraged to think about what they might have worn to dance in pre-war Prague. The venue is a superb folly built around a hundred years ago. Tickets on sale in late June. Best wishes,

Hi, I work for the Stoke-on-Trent Museums Service and I'm organising an event and exhibition called the Potteries at War, to take place later this year. The event, a tea dance with big band, wartime singers and military vehicles will take place on 4th September. Then the exhibition runs from 17th Sept 2005 to end January 2006. The event will be free admission, with people being encouraged to bring along items dating from wartime, either domestic or war related. There will be a reminiscence section where people can have their artefact photographed and then write down their memories, some of these will then be added to the exhibition. However I only started the job a couple of weeks ago and although I've managed to trace some useful contacts I'm struggling a bit with others. Our local re-enactment group are already attending another event on the 4th Sept, therefore I was wondering if anyone knew of other groups who may be interested in attending. Also I'm very keen to have some people dancing at the event (thought it would be really nice for some of the older people attending who can't get up and dance anymore to see them), although at present have no leads. Any other advice/ recommendations would be really welcome. Thanks for reading. Vicky

Hi Kate, and all. I tried to drop you an e-mail Kate but I'm not sure if you got it? I had trouble with your address once before, so let me know if not and I'll try again. Well I'm certain that I'll be going to the do at Embsay, I just need to organise myself better for accommodation. Is there anyone else going to the Embsay do? I'd really love to have somebody to hook up with there and show me the ropes as this will be my first event. Now I'm off to try and find the appropriate clothing!

I'm currently researching the period of austerity which directly followed the Second World War. I'd be really interested to hear peoples memories of how this affected their everyday lives, eg. moving house, buying furniture, making clothes and generally making do. Also any anecdotes about this period would be really useful. Please post all messages to this Guestbook. Many thanks.

Haworth (Yorks) 1940's weekend coming up 7 - 8th May. Great authentic setting up the old cobbled main street, also at the Steam Railway Station close by. The Apothecary Shop & The Souk (vintage clothing shop) are well worth a visit while you're there. More on good clothing suppliers. To Mark in Chesterfield. As well as Celia's in Nottingham, who is good and knows her stuff very well, there is also Charlea Cowdrey who runs 'Step Back In TIme' out at East Drayton, near Retford. She also knows her stuff and will see you right with some lovely period pieces. Try her as well on 01777 249333. I have hired/bought plenty from her and use her for the costumes I wear on stage for the concerts at our wartime events. Hope this is of use. Happy hunting. Mark - regarding your comments about finding suitable clothing. Do check eBay first - they have a 'home front section' as well as gentleman's clothing in periods such as 1930s / 1940s etc. Be aware that the cut, finish and weight of cloth in the 1930s and 1940s was different to modern standards. Avoid at all costs man made materials and any of those dreadful double breasted 'draped' jackets which have the wrong shape and venting. Be careful of reproduction clothing and ensure you check lining, buttons and detail. Do some reearch first by looking at museum collections, old photographs and films. Having got the clothing, you need to learn to 'wear it' - original film of the period shows you how to get this right. There are hundreds of vintage clothing shops on the web and vintage clothing fairs happen all over the UK on regular basis. In your area, pop in to Celia's Vintage Clothing Shop in Nottingham - call Celia first on 01159 473036 and explain what you want. Another good vintage supplier is in Tutbury and is called 'Back in Fashion' - call Wendy on 01283 814964. Good luck and have fun, best wishes

This is a truly wonderful and eye-opening site. As one who grew up as a child in World war 2 I am living my retirement years constantly recalling and recounting past experiences and have used many of them in a semi-autobiographical novel (as yet unfinished) and other articles on my personal website, www.wordsweb.co.uk, which also carries the first 24 letters from a collection of more than 200 written by a British soldier to his family in London at the rate of about one a week throughout the entire war years, giving a graphic and humorous account of life in those times, including his first year, stationed in Dover, under bombardment by shelling from France as well as bombing from the air. I hope some of your members/visitors will find something of interest there, and would be delighted to hear from them if they care to visit the website and leave me a note. I shall certainly be returning here regularly to refresh my memories, and hope to contribute some of my own. Sincerely,

We are so pleased to see Natasha and Paul go through to the next stage of the BBC 1 Television series "Strictly Dance Fever"! If you missed the show tonight, make sure you catch them over the coming shows (and vote for them!). If you missed them, you missed a great performance and an opportunity for swing / lindy dance to be seen by the nation. All their friends have been voting for them and thanks to Julie & Andrew for 'giving us all the heads up' for the show earlier in the week. Congratulations again!

Just a quick note after a recce at Twinwoods Airfield near Bedford where Glenn Miller took his last flight in December 1944 - Twinwoods CAMPAIGN 'The War Walks' on the 11th and 12th June promises to be a superb event! We have seen the plans this weekend - don't miss it! The hanger dance on Saturday night with Top DJ 'SWINGSHIFT' will be even better than last year - if you were there, you'll remember this was one of the highlights of 2004. Watch this space for updates . . . .

Help! Are we the only East Anglians who find it really difficult to discover details of 1940s events in our area? We love the era - love to dress up in the civilian clothes etc, and have certainly enjoyed the events we have been to (North Norfolk Railway, Parham Air Museum, Debach Airfield, Rougham Airfield), but would love to know if there are others we are missing out on. If anyone can let us know of Suffolk/Norfolk events coming up we would be immensely grateful.
