The Women's Voluntary Services (WVS) 1939-45
Within The Island Fortress - The uniforms, Insignia & Ephemera
of the Home Front in Britain 1939-1945, The Women's Voluntary Service
(WVS)
by Jon Mills.
This is the definative reference work for the 'ladies in green'
featuring superb photographs of original uniforms, badges and
ephemera worn during
WW2. An essential guide for re-enactors and collectors, this excellent
book is the first in a series on Home Front organisations. Lady
Reading formed the WVS in 1938 and the service saw front line
action throughout
WW2. As with Jon's other reference works on the ARP and The Home
Guard, meticulous attention to detail and focus on important facts
give the
historian and collector a real checklist with background to support
the findings. Illustrated throughout with black and white as well
as colour photographs. |

Reproduction civilian respirator (gas mask)
boxes - made from the original 1936 grade specification of board, these
boxes are not to be confused with the flimsy light card ones on sale
at museum shops. These were produced in volume for a project some years
ago and are excellent copies. The construction and look of the boxes
is first class and they have appeared as film props and set dressing.
The boxes come flat packed with typical period cotton string and are
easily folded for storage. Essential kit for all WW2 re-enactors - don't
forget, for living history events your gas mask box should look new
. . . not seventy years old!
Numbers of these reproductions are VERY limited, so orders are restricted
to one per customer. |

The evacuee civilian respirator (gas mask) box
set for KS2 children who may be playing the part of an evacuee at school
or re-enactment. Our version of the respirator box is made to the same
size and construction of the original, but uses a robust cardboard for
self assembly. This version should not be confused with the flimsy light
card ones on sale at some museum shops. The respirator box would make
an excellent addition to the evacuee's costume and will complete the
period outfit. This version of the respirator box comes with a stamped
evacuee label which copies the original "SCHOOL EVACUATION PARTY".
The label stamping and marking are ready for the child's name to be
added and then tied to their clothing. A perfect set for the KS2 child
studying the Home Front in WW2. Could also be used as a cheaper alternative
for someone wishing to carry a passable copy of the adult civilian respirator
box who does not demand the original construction of our premium copy. |

Great War 1914-18
We have over two dozen superb quality facsimile trench maps - ideal
for researchers, historians and re-enactors. These are full colour productions
(not photocopies) of real WW1 trench maps covering areas such as Ypres,
The Somme and Passchendale. For many years First World War trench maps
have been collectors items and therefore command high prices. A number
of black and white photocopies have been available but lack clarity
and definition. Theses maps include original annotations and comments
and are an essential item for any battlefield tours. The maps are large
format and delivered folded but may be framed for display. Please request
full details of the maps currently available. |

Facsimile of a tourist guide to The Western Battlefields
- first published in 1920 (with reprints into the 1930s)
This a a lovely period piece! Perfect for the re-enactor, historian
or enthusiast, this guidebook was published in 1920 to cater for the
tourist market traveling to Europe in the 1920s and 30s. At the time,
this was a guide to the events of The Great War and contained a short
history of 'the British Line'. Originally sold for 2/6d by Gale and
Polden in London (available from all good booksellers!), the book has
62 pages of instructions and photographs for the visitor to Ypres, Lens,
Loos, the Somme and many more places of interest. Recommendations of
what to wear ("an old golfing suit is ideal"), what to avoid
("I know a lady who stooped to pick up a souvenir from the battlefields
- only to be shocked to find it was a boot containing human bones")
and how to make your travel plans. This is a fascinating guide with
charming period advertisements and many photographs. |
